Shafer Canyon, Utah
The dirt road hugging the walls of Shafer Canyon descends 1,400 feet to White Rim Mesa and then another 700 feet to the Colorado River. The early Indians were probably the first to use this route to the top. In the early 1900s, John "Sog" Shafer and other ranchers used this trail to drive their cattle down to winter in the sheltered canyons. In the spring, the cattle were driven up the canyon to graze the the upland meadows. During the uranium boom of the 1950s, the trail was widened to allow trucks to haul ore out of the canyons.
